New INDEPENDENCE DAY 2 Poster

At the Licensing Expo 2015 in Las Vegas, many studios and production companies like Warner Bros. are showing off their goods, from costumes to posters, and mostly everything you need to sell a movie. But it is the latter that is what 20th Century Fox was concerned for Roland Emmerich’s upcoming sequel to Independence Day, as they released the first official poster! Check it out down below!

After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global catastrophe on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

So either the aliens have returned to suck up all of humanity through that pretty light beam (not likely) or they’re back with a vengeance and have brought along their powerful world-destroying ship to punch a hole straight through to Earth’s core. Something tells me we’re going to need more than a clever hacker and a smart-ass pilot to bring that sucker down.

Opening in theaters on June 24, 2016, Independence Day 2 stars Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Liam Hemsworth, Maika Monroe, Jessie Usher, Joey King, Sela Ward, Brett Spiner, Vivica A. Fox,William Fichtner, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Judd Hirsch.

Sela Ward Set To Play POTUS In INDEPENDENCE DAY 2

Sela Ward is set to play the current President of the United States, President Lanford, in Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day 2. The CSI: NY favorite will reunite with Emmerich as they last worked together on 20th Century Fox’s The Day After Tomorrow. She last appeared at Fox in the box office champ Gone Girl from David Fincher.

Ward joins a cast that includes Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman and Vivica A. Fox (all of whom were in the 1996 original that made $811 million worldwide). Liam Hemsworth and Charlotte Gainsbourg have also joined up for the pic, which is eyeing a May production start and has a June 24, 2016, release date.

The script for the sequel was written by director/producer Emmerich, producer Dean Devlin, James Vanderbilt, James A Woods and Nicolas Wright. Harald Kloser will also produce. Ute Emmerich is the exec producer.

INDEPENDENCE DAY 2 Adds Maika Monroe as President Whitmore’s Daughter

Just weeks after It Follows scored over $160,000 in one weekend in just four theaters and earned itself a wide release, Maika Monroe has been cast in the highly anticipated sequel to Independence Day.

Director Roland Emmerich made the announcement on Twitter, but THR also chimed in with a few more details. Apparently Monroe will be the female lead in the film, Liam Hemsworth’s character’s love interest and President Thomas J. Whitmore’s (Bill Pullman) daughter, Patricia Whitmore.

Once filming on Independence Day 2 gets underway, Monroe will join Pullman and Hemsworth as well as ID vets Jeff Goldblum, Judd Hirsch, Brent Spiner and Vivica A. Fox, and newcomers Jessie Usher, Travis Tope, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Joey King. The film is expected to go into production next month and hit theaters on June 24, 2016.

INDEPENDENCE DAY 2 Adds Joey King and Brent Spiner

Director Roland Emmerich has revealed that two more have joined the cast of Independence Day 2 – Joey King (Oz The Great and Powerful, The Conjuring, White House Down) and Brent Spiner (“Star Trek: The Next Generation”). Spiner appeared in the 1996 original as Dr. Brackish Okun.

The two join a cast that includes Jeff Goldblum, Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Vivica A. Fox, and Travis Tope. It is believed that Bill Pullman will be returning in some capacity as well, but the actor’s involvement has not yet been confirmed.

Set to hit theaters on June 24, 2016 (almost exactly 20 years after the original), Independence Day 2 is looking to begin production in May with a script most recently rewritten by Carter Blanchard (best known for the short-lived 2009 series “G vs E”). Previous drafts were done by Emmerich and Dean Devlin, and then by James Vanderbilt.

The original Independence Day opened on July 3, 1996 and earned an impressive $817.4 million worldwide. Emmerich is also set to produce the sequel alongside Devlin and Harald Kloser.

Independence Day 2 Casts Jessie Usher, Liam Hemsworth, And Jeff Goldblum!

Jessie Usher, who headlines the Starz original series “Survivor’s Remorse,” has taken a leading role in director Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day 2. Emmerich himself broke the news on his official Facebook page with The Hollywood Reporter chiming in to reveal that Usher will be playing Dylan Hiller, the son of Will Smith’s Captain Steven Hiller from the original ID4. Ross Bagley played the part in the 1996 original.

“My producing partner Harald Kloser noticed Jessie in between sets of pushups at the gym and gave him an audition,” Emmerich says of the chance encounter that brought Usher to his attention. “As they say, the rest is history!”

"Independence Day 2" Confirmed : Will Smith Not Included.

Ever since Independence Day owned the summer box office in 1996 fans of the film have been wondering when a sequel might happen, and today, Deadline reports that 20th Century Fox has finally given the green light to Independence Day 2. The studio still has to hash out the details before director Roland Emmerich is officially onboard, but that’s probably just a formality. Production on the sequel will begin in May. It’ll give the film a good shot of making its pre-announced June 24, 2016 release date, which will also mark the 20th anniversary of the original film.
An inside source has told Deadline that Fox only gave a green light for a single film. That may surprise some as Emmerich has previously mentioned doing a trilogy and shooting two films back-to-back. The screenplay was written by Carter Blanchard, Roland Emmerich, Dean Devlin, and screenwriter James Vanderbilt provided the final polish.
Over the past few years, interest in the sequel has picked up steam as director Roland Emmerich has been teasing the potential storylines. In September of 2013, Emmerich told Empire, “It’s a parallel history. Humans rebuild whatever they have – bigger, newer, shinier – and then they forget. Maybe, 20 years later, [the aliens are] never coming back…”

‘Independence Day 2’, ‘Hitman:Agent 47’ and ‘Hot Tub Time Machine 2’ Get New Release Dates

A handful of major studios, including 20th Century Fox, Paramount Pictures, and The Weinstein Company, have shuffled around their upcoming film slate a bit, setting new dates for such noteworthy projects as the sequels Independence Day 2 and Hot Tub Time Machine 2; the action series reboots Hitman: Agent 47 and The Transporter Legacy; and a few other miscellaneous projects, on the side.
First up, Fox has moved Independence Day 2 up a week to June 24th, 2016. Director Roland Emmerich’s sequel, which actor Jeff Goldblum recently confirmed is still being actively developed, will no longer open during the Fourth of July holiday frame like its predecessor did in 1996; instead, the alien invasion tentpole will face the Mummy reboot in its first weekend.
Meanwhile, Fox has pushed Agent 47 all the way back from February 27th, 2015 to August 28th next year. It’s not the most shocking move, as the video game adaptation seems more befitting of a summertime launch anyway.
Elsewhere, Paramount and The Weinstein Company have pulled Hot Tub Time Machine 2 and Paddington, respectively, from their originally planned Christmas 2014 release dates. The Hot Tub Time Machine sequel ought to fare better on its new February 20th, 2015 release date, where the raunchy comedy will provide a funny alternative to the gritty dramatic thriller The Gunman and the Natalie Portman western/historical drama Jane Got a Gun.
The winter holiday frame is especially competitive when it comes to family-friendly material this year (see: Annie, Into the Woods, etc.), so the Weinsteins’ decision to shift Paddington – a new big screen adaptation of the beloved British children’s literature character – to a far less jam-packed January 16th, 2015 launch pad, seems perfectly reasonable. The movie will now serve as counter-programming to the Chris Hemsworth thriller Blackhat and the Kevin Hart comedy The Wedding Ringer in mid-January next year.
In other release date news:
EuropaCorp’s The Transporter Legacy – a reboot of the Transporter franchise that replaces Jason Statham with Ed Skrein (Daario Naharis on Game of Thrones season 3) – has taken Agent 47‘s old spot on February 27th, 2015.
Paramount’s Scouts vs. Zombies, a horror/comedy from Paranormal Activity series writer (and The Marked Ones director) Christopher Landon, has been moved back from February 20th, 2015 to October 30th next year, where it aims to take advantage of the Halloween season demand for scary entertainment.
Sony/Columbia has moved up the Untitled Seth Rogen/Joseph Gordon-Levitt X-Mas Movie from December 11th to November 25th next year. The comedy will now hit theaters during the same Thanksgiving holiday frame as such films as Ridley Scott’s space survival drama The Martian and Pixar’s upcoming original animated feature The Good Dinosaur.
