Filming Starts for Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight

The Weinstein Company announced today that principal photography has begun in Telluride, Colorado on Academy Award winning writer/director Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming feature The Hateful Eight. TWC plans to release The Hateful Eight theatrically in 2015.

More supporting cast members have also been announced, most of whom have worked with the filmmaker in the past. James Parks (Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2), Dana Gourrier (Django Unchained), Zoë Bell (Death Proof), Gene Jones (No Country for Old Men), Keith Jefferson (Django Unchained), Lee Horsley (Django Unchained), Craig Stark (Django Unchained) and Belinda Owino (Django Unchained) have all come on board.

The lead cast for the film will include: Samuel L. Jackson (Django Unchained), Kurt Russell (Escape From New York), Jennifer Jason Leigh (Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle), Walton Goggins (“Justified”), Demian Bichir (A Better Life), Tim Roth (Reservoir Dogs), Michael Madsen (Reservoir Dogs), Bruce Dern (Nebraska) and Channing Tatum (Foxcatcher). Written and directed by Tarantino, The Hateful Eight is produced by Richard N. Gladstein, Stacey Sher and Shannon McIntosh. Harvey Weinstein, Bob Weinstein and Georgia Kacandes are executive producing, and Coco Francini and William Paul Clark are associate producing.

In The Hateful Eight, set six or eight or twelve years after the Civil War, a stagecoach hurtles through the wintry Wyoming landscape. The passengers, bounty hunter John Ruth (Russell) and his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Leigh), race towards the town of Red Rock where Ruth, known in these parts as “The Hangman,” will bring Domergue to justice. Along the road, they encounter two strangers: Major Marquis Warren (Jackson), a black former union soldier turned infamous bounty hunter, and Chris Mannix (Goggins), a southern renegade who claims to be the town’s new Sheriff. Losing their lead on the blizzard, Ruth, Domergue, Warren and Mannix seek refuge at Minnie’s Haberdashery, a stagecoach stopover on a mountain pass. When they arrive at Minnie’s, they are greeted not by the proprietor but by four unfamiliar faces. Bob (Bichir), who’s taking care of Minnie’s while she’s visiting her mother, is holed up with Oswaldo Mobray (Roth), the hangman of Red Rock, cow-puncher Joe Gage (Madsen), and Confederate General Sanford Smithers (Dern). As the storm overtakes the mountainside stopover, our eight travelers come to learn they may not make it to Red Rock after all…

Presented in glorious 70mm, The Hateful Eight marks a continuation of the long-standing relationship between the celebrated filmmaker and the Weinsteins, who have collaborated on all of Tarantino’s films from Reservoir Dogs through Django Unchained.

Sony Was Considering A DJANGO/ZORRO Crossover Film With Tarantino

Another day, another report on the now infamous “Sony Hack.” The Business Insider is now reporting that Sony was considering a possible crossover between the long dormant Zorro, who was last seen on screen in 2005 with Antonio Banderas (Puss In Boots) playing the titular character, and 2012’s Django Unchained, which starred Academy Award-winner Jamie Foxx (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) in the lead role. In an e-mail dated September 28th sent from Sony co-chairman Amy Pascal to the Academy Award-winning director Quentin Tarantino, she discusses her interest in a possible crossover. Read the e-mail below:

HELLO AMY P HERE… HOW ARE YOU? I WANNA TALK ABOUT DJANGO/ZORRO WHEN YOU FEEL LIKE IT … ALSO I STILL WANNA DO THE DION BROTHERS AND JUST BECAUSE I DIDN’T GET TO BE A PART OF HATEFUL DOESN’T MEAN IM EVER GONNA STOP WANTING TO WORK WITH YOU (AND HARVEY) BEST ALWAYS…AMY

Tarantino was fairly enthusiasic about the possible crossover and responded by saying “D/Z could be really fun!” He also expressed interest in The Dion Brothers as well as another unmentioned Sony film: The Baby Blue Marine.

This is not the first time a crossover between the two properties has been mentioned. A crossover comic series written by Tarantino was released in November by DC Comics & Dynamite Entertainment. It served as a sequel of sorts to the hit 2012 film.

Quentin Tarantino Retiring After "Hateful Eight"

Quentin Tarantino has been talking about retiring for several years – and the director is truly serious.
During a talk with international buyers last week, Tarantino insisted he plans to retire after his 10th film. He’s currently shopping his eighth, “The Hateful Eight.”
Actors Kurt Russell and Samuel L. Jackson were in attendance and were skeptical. The former said “You don’t actually believe that s—, do you?” and the latter wondered, “What’s Quentin going to do with himself if he’s not doing this?” But Tarantino held firm to his resolve, according to Deadline.
“I don’t believe you should stay on stage until people are begging you to get off. I like the idea of leaving them wanting a bit more,” he explained. “I do think directing is a young man’s game and I like the idea of an umbilical cord connection from my first to my last movie. I’m not trying to ridicule anyone who thinks differently, but I want to go out while I’m still hard … I like that I will leave a 10-film filmography, and so I’ve got two more to go after this. It’s not etched in stone, but that is the plan.”
He left a little room to do more than 10, adding, “If, later on, I come across a good movie, I won’t not do it just because I said I wouldn’t.”
As to the question of what Tarantino would do with his time if he wasn’t directing, he offered, “Writing plays and books, going gracefully into my tender years.”
