Christopher McQuarrie Talks MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – ROGUE NATION STUNTS
Over the course of the Mission: Impossible films, Tom Cruise has dangled from ceilings, jumped from motorcycles and helicopters, and scaled the tallest building in the world. So it’s safe to say the series isn’t meant for someone who has difficulty with heights. Then again… “I have crazy vertigo,” says Rebecca Ferguson (Hercules), the latest addition to the franchise. She plays an operative with ambiguous allegiances who aids Cruise’s Ethan Hunt in his fight against the Syndicate, a mysterious shadow organization that operates as an anti-IMF. “Of course, the first scene we did, Tom and me, was throwing ourselves off a Vienna rooftop. I was going to say, ‘It couldn’t get worse,’ but it definitely did.”
At least she didn’t have to hang on to the side of an Airbus A400M cargo plane as it took off—something director Christopher McQuarrie (Jack Reacher) reserved for his star. “They brought me this plane, and I was looking at the model,” says McQuarrie. “And I said to Tom, ‘What if you were on the outside of this plane?’ I was kinda half joking when I said it, and he just looked at me and said, ‘Yeah, I could do that.’” Cruise, always one to do his own stunts, was actually strapped to the plane as it was flying at 3,000 feet while filming the sequence, which gives us vertigo just thinking about it.
MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE ROGUE NATION Trailer Released!
Stunts that involved speeding on motorcycles, getting airborne in cars and holding his breath underwater for a lengthy period were executed in Morocco, Vienna and London. So there’s little time for rest, even after riding outside an A400 for two days.
“I was pretty exhausted, but there’s always more work to be done on a Mission movie,” says Cruise. “It always seems like there’s not enough hours in the day making them.”
A Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot production, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation will hit 2D and IMAX theaters July 31.
Director Christopher McQuarrie Reveals MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 5 Details
Production is nearing the end on Mission: Impossible 5 in London, with the film’s new July 31st release date looming closer. Writer/director Christopher McQuarrie (Jack Reacher) has been pretty vocal on Twitter throughout filming, interacting with fans and sharing some updates here and there—most recently when reports swirled that the ending of the film was being retooled.
As filming is almost over, McQuarrie took to Twitter earlier today and participated in a spontaneous Q&A re: Mission: Impossible 5. He was refreshingly forthcoming about the production, revealing why certain characters aren’t returning, discussing the film’s tone, and more—all the while keeping the plot and such in the bag. Most excitingly, McQuarrie says the official title and a trailer will be coming “very soon”.
Since McQuarrie addressed a number of responses, I’ve compiled a list of some of the bigger beans the filmmaker spilled below, followed by a few select tweets. Here’s some of what we found out:
- The ending of the movie did not have to be rewritten or reshot, it had to be prepped. That’s what they’re filming right now.
- The subtitle and trailer are coming soon.
- Ghost Protocol star Paula Patton and Mission: Impossible 3 star Maggie Q were unavailable to return.
- Composer Joe Kraemer (Jack Reacher) is “playing with something retro, of course” for the score.
- When asked if we’d get another great McQuarrie shootout, he responded “Kind of. Trust me.”
- Those expecting the film to be old school “won’t be disappointed.”
- Nods to the original “abound.”
- Sean Harris is indeed playing the film’s villain.
- mission-impossible-5-simon-pegg-tom-cruiseWe will see more of Jeremy Renner’s Agent Brandt, Ving Rhames has more screentime than he did in Ghost Protocol, and Simon Pegg’s Benji “gets his hands plenty dirty.”
- The film will have the feel of an episode of the old show.
- We’ll know from the trailer what McQuarrie wanted to do in this story that hadn’t been done in other M:I stories.
- There will be some score-less action scenes as in Jack Reacher and McQuarrie’s first film, The Way of the Gun.
- There are specific Brian De Palma references.
- McQuarrie broke his personal record for footage shot.
For more info on the film, check out a few of McQuarrie’s tweets below, and stay tuned for the trailer in the coming weeks.

"MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 5" Production Halted
Paramount has enough confidence in Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible 5 that it moved its release date way up from Christmas to July 31. But the production recently shut down for a week or so in London because the film’s ending was deemed unsatisfactory.
Director Christopher McQuarrie was given the extra time to work out a new and improved finale with a writer friend whose identity remains a mystery and who will neither be paid nor credited.
It’s unusual and costly for a big-budget film to halt in the middle of production, especially one with a release date about five months away. While one source claims McQuarrie was “scrambling” to come up with an ending that would work, a Paramount insider puts a more positive spin on the break.
“Chris, Tom [Cruise] and a third person wanted to take a minute to get from what they thought was a good place to a more perfect place,” says this person, noting that if the studio had been really concerned, it would not have moved up the release date.
Paramount suffered through more serious third-act problems with its 2013 zombie apocalypse movie World War Z. That film, starring Brad Pitt and directed by Marc Forster, was shut down and its final third reconceived, with its release date pushed back several times. It ultimately became a hit when it finally reached theaters.
One high-level executive jokes that M:I5 is not in any way seriously behind schedule, saying, “Are you kidding? We made World War Z.”
The last film in the Cruise-fronted series, Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol, released in Dec. 2011, earned nearly $650 million globally — a franchise best.
‘Mission: Impossible 5′ Set for Imax Release
“Mission: Impossible 5″ has been set for release in Imax theaters as part of its worldwide launch on July 31.
Paramount Pictures, Skydance Productions, Bad Robot and Imax made the announcement Friday. The film will be digitally remastered into the Imax format.
Producers are Tom Cruise, J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk. Christopher McQuarrie directs, with Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames reprising their roles. Alec Baldwin, Rebecca Ferguson and Sean Harris also star.
“Imax is so important in giving the audience the best experience of the film we have made,” Cruise said.
Paramount decided two weeks ago that it would move the release date forward by five months from Christmas to July 31.

‘Mission: Impossible 5′ Moved Up To Summer
Paramount has rethought its plan to open the next Mission: Impossible sequel this coming Christmas, instead moving it up to the heart of summer. Skydance’s Tom Cruise-Jeremy Renner actioner Mission: Impossible 5 from Christopher McQuarrie, who directed Cruise in 2012’s Jack Reacher, now will open July 31. It will face off against Warner Bros’ action remake Point Break, Focus’ sci-fi thriller Self/Less and the Weinstein Company’s boxing drama Southpaw. Moving into M:I5‘s December 25 slot is the studio’s live-action/CGI hybrid Monster Trucks, which had been set for May 29.
It will rev up against a pair of Fox pics: kids sequel Alvin And The Chipmunks 4 and drama Joy.
