ARROW’s Katie Cassidy Joins Period Thriller The Wolves At The Door

Arrow star Katie Cassidy has joined the cast of New Line’s period thriller The Wolves At The Door, helmed by Annabelle director (and frequent James Wan-cinematographer) John Leonetti. Written by Gary Dauberman, the film takes place in 1969, as four friends endure a terrifying home invasion in the Hollywood hills. Peter Safran is producing. Shooting is set to last from mid-May to late June in Los Angeles.

Cassidy will be starring opposite the earlier-announced Miles Fisher, Elizabeth Henstridge, and Adam Campbell. Cambell, represented by ICM Partners and Framework Entertainment, has recently appeared in The Five Year Engagement and the ABC series Mixology. Henstridge, best known as Jemma Simmons on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., is repped by UTA and managed by Haven Entertainment.

Cassidy has starred since 2012 as Dinah Laurel Lance/Black Canary on The CW’s Arrow. Her most recent film was the John Suits-directed The Scribbler.

Katie Cassidy Talks Earning BLACK CANARY Status

http://www.hitfix.com/video/overlay/becoming-black-canary-is-the-best-thing-ever-to-katie-cassidy Katie Cassidy was cast as Laurel Lance on “Arrow” in the spring of 2012 and fans of the comic immediately went, “So she’s Black Canary.”

It took three years, however, for Cassidy and Laurel to finally take on the mantle of Black Canary.

There was a first season that pushed Laurel to emotional extremes, but not into the costume of a masked vigilante.

There was a second season that included more emotional extremes, but when Black Canary was introduced, it was Laurel’s sister Sara (Caity Lotz) taking on the bad guys.

It’s only been in Season 3 that Cassidy and Laurel have achieved their Black Canary destiny, which Cassidy calls “the coolest thing ever.”

“I’ve waited for so long for this and, honestly, I think that it was done in the right way,” Cassidy told HitFix on the PaleyFest 2015 purple carpet over the weekend. “We didn’t do it too soon and I feel that Laurel really had to earn becoming this superhero. You can’t just, all of a sudden overnight, wake up and be able to do it.”

In the interview, featured above, Cassidy admits that she was sold on “Arrow” with the potential of becoming Black Canary and that the waiting wasn’t always easy. She also talks about how Black Canary works as an outlet for some of the anger inside Laurel and that her addictive personality will continue to be relevant.

ARROW’s Plans For Thea And Laurel

Season 3 of Arrow left fans at the mid-season break unsure of whether Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) would accept Ra’s al Ghul’s (Matt Nable) offer to become the new leader of the League of Assassins.  It’s an interesting offer, considering that Ra’s has a capable daughter in Nysaa (Katrina Law).  In comic book lore, Ra’s has traditionally made this offer to Batman and the position comes with the requirement that he marry his daughter, Talia al Ghul.  Whether Oliver is required to marry Nyssa remains to be seen.  However, the show’s executive producers have shared that Nyssa will have a role to play in giving direction to two of the show’s main female leads, Thea Queen (Willa Holland) and Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy).

Marc Guggenheim told E! that although it appeared that Thea was asking Nyssa to end her life for her role in Sara’s (Caity Lotz) death, the two will also find common ground.  “We’re working towards telling a different story with Thea, it won’t always be just her acting out.  She’s processing a huge amount of guilt and regret. At the end of [episode] 15, she’s essentially attempting suicide by Nyssa. It’s a continuing progression. It won’t just be a repetition of her acting out. In [episode] 16, she looks for closure in another way because spoiler alert, Nyssa’s not going to kill [Thea].”

Laurel will obviously need further training as it looks as if Ted Grant’s Wildcat (J.R. Ramirez) isn’t as capable as some of the other fighters on the show.  Could Nyssa step in to train Laurel the same way she trained Sara? Could Nyssa also provide training for Thea, given the fact that her relationship with Malcolm has soured? Answers should be provided when Arrow returns with all new episodes on March 18th at 8PM on The CW.

Oliver Has Return For An Uprising

Next week’s Arrow promises to be a big one as the Emerald Archer finally makes his way back to his city and it looks like his timing couldn’t be any better with Malcolm Merlyn having joined Team Arrow under false pretenses. Come check out a brand new international promo now!

(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = “//connect.facebook.net/en_GB/all.js#xfbml=1”; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, ‘script’, ‘facebook-jssdk’));

MALCOLM MAKES AN OFFER TO HELP TEAM ARROW – Still operating without Oliver (Stephen Amell) and desperate to stop Brick (guest star Vinnie Jones), Team Arrow is forced to consider Malcolm’s (John Barrowman) offer to help shut Brick down as Malcolm has a personal score to settle with the felon. Roy (Colton Haynes) and Laurel (Katie Cassidy) point out that the team could use some help to save the innocents of The Glades, but Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) is adamantly against it. They look to Diggle to make the final decision. Meanwhile, the flashbacks chronicle Malcolm’s descent from kind-hearted father and husband to cold-blooded killer after the murder of his wife. Jesse Warn directed the episode written by Beth Schwartz & Brian Ford Sullivan (#312).

Katie Cassidy On Legacy Heroes, Training At 5 a.m. And Olicity Shippers

The lovely people of ComicBook.com got the chance to have a chat with Arrow’s Katie Cassidy. In the following interview Cassidy talks about the series, her years of waiting for a chance in the mask and just how she handles online fans and critics in a show that’s got such a passionate base.

You’ve seemed really excited about your character and your story in recent interviews. Do you feel like you’re about to enter a really good status quo for Laurel?

Yeah! I mean, look: As an actor, I remember when I met with Greg and Marc and Andrew about this show before we shot the pilot that this is where this character was going to go. That was definitely a huge thing for me. I wanted to do action, I wanted to stay with Warner Bros. and CW and I loved the fact that this character had this journey that she would go on but I didn’t necessarily know how long it would take or what the journey would look like.

I don’t think they did, either; they just knew eventually at some point that Laurel would turn into the Black Canary. When that would be…who knows? They assumed Season One or Two, but you’re shooting a show and things change and you’re trying to find your footing and what’s working and what’s not. I think it’s smart that every character has to earn their suit or their costume. You can’t just overnight all of a sudden be a superhero. You have to go through things and hit your rock bottom and then be able to come out on top and build character and be strong.

This season, it feels a bit to the viewer like it’s been easier for you, so I think it’s easy to forget that there’s still a lot hanging over Laurel, including when Lance finds out about Sara.

Easier on who — Laurel or Katie?

Well, I meant Laurel. She’s found a role for herself and she’s confident and it feels like she’s in a good place…but there’s still this past that’s waiting to bite her in the ass.

oliver-lance-laurelWell, to be honest with you, I can’t play anything that isn’t as real as possible which is why I was in training over hiatus and I have been. And when I said to you, “Do you mean Laurel or Katie?,” it’s because this role has become a lot more physically demanding for me personally.

I wake up at 5 a.m. and go to the gym and work with my trainer as I go to work and it has taken a lot out of me but every single moment has been worth it because I live for it. I love it. I just think that I have the same reaction that Laurel would have, where yeah, this stuff has happened and she’s honoring her sister’s death and she’s defending her sister but she doesn’t want to think of the fact that her father doesn’t know that she isn’t Sara and she still is trying to bury it.

That’s the thing that I can do because that’s what I think she’s doing until there comes a point where she’s going to have to tell her father. How he will react and what she says and how she says it, you guys will find out but I think that there’s a moment where it starts to become your reality so I try not to think too much about that because I feel like for Laurel, it would eat her up inside but she’s dealing with so much that she can’t take on more.

DC Comics has a history of legacy heroes — people who take on the costume of their predecessors. I think this is the first time that’s happened onscreen because obviously you don’t usually kill your lead characters…

On Arrow it turns out we actually do! [Laughs]

…That’s true! Is that kind of cool for you to be the tip of that spear in a way?

Yeah, absolutely. It’s an honor and it’s an honor to get the opportunity to play this character. Just being a part of a show that already had such a huge fanbase from the comic books, and to be perceived as well as it has been has been a blessing and I’m thrilled.

Last thing: How do you deal with the fans? The shipping community on this show has gotten so crazy that we now have Jimmy Kimmel having said “Olicity” on the air. Do you just kind of black all that out and work?

[Laughs] Um…yes! Because I think the worst thing that you can do as an actor is to get caught up in the bulls–t. And I’m sorry for saying that word, but I ignore…you can’t compare yourself to other people, you can’t get caught up in all the drama. The best way that I’ve been able to deal with it is to just ignore all of it. I’m here to do a job and I’m passionate about it and I love it and I want to make the fans happy but I don’t need to be hearing or reading or seeing negative things because that’s not going to help me or my character in any way.

ARROW: Katie Cassidy On Suiting Up As ‘Black Canary’

Talking to Comic Book Resources, Katie Cassidy had this to say about her debut as the popular superhero. “On January 21, you will see Laurel in the suit and becoming Black Canary — but just because she suited up doesn’t necessarily mean she’s good, first of all,” she revealed. “But it’s part of her journey. In Season Three, she goes from avenging her sister’s death, to honoring to her sister, to basically becoming her sister, but her own version of it. And she really steps up to the plate, I think. Now that Oliver’s gone, [she] takes the reins and is like, “I got this.” She’s a strong woman, and I think she’s going to kick some butt.”

As for the opportunities becoming this costumed character allows her, the actress had this to say about some of the new interactions we’ll see as Black Canary makes her presence felt. “In Season Two, it was great to finally be in the Foundry — and the Lair. It was so cool. I was in there a lot, and it’s awesome. I loved being a part of the A-story. I love working with Emily [Bett Rickards]. She’s wonderful. Our characters, we have a really, really incredible interaction in Episode 13, and she is just wonderful. So I love working with her. I love working with Colton [Haynes] and David Ramsey. I don’t really work with the three of them that often — or haven’t. Now, I work with them a lot! It’s great.” Finally, a big part of the character is obviously her canary cry, a blast of sound waves used to take her enemies down. As for how and when it will factor into the series, Cassidy added: “We haven’t seen that yet. But I do feel like maybe at some point, Laurel will have her own version of it, and maybe it won’t be necessarily in the same form [as the comics].”

Laurel Isn’t A Superhero Yet!!

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Arrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim clarified a bit of confusion about Laurel Lance, set to become the Black Canary in the midseason premiere of the series this January.
While some fans have objected to the idea that the character is moving too fast — suiting up to fight crime without much in the way of training — Guggenheim says that’s actually something that will be addressed in the narrative, and showrunners aren’t trying to just skip to the end.
“Just because you put on a mask and a costume doesn’t mean you’re a superhero,” Guggenheim said. “A mask does not a hero make. We’re really at the beginning of Laurel’s journey to becoming the Black Canary, not the end by virtue of the fact that she’s put on a costume.”

Black Canary And Arsenal Team Up

Another look at Arrow’s Black Canary has surfaced online, but it’s a little more candid than the one fans were treated to last week.
The new image comes through Felicity Smoak’s—or actor Emily Bett’s—Instagram account. In-between filming scenes for this season of Arrow, Bett snapped a photo of Arsenal actor Colton Hayes and Laurel Lance actor Katie Cassidy enjoying some downtime.
Cassidy’s Laurel Lance character, while dressed as Black Canary in the photo, has not officially donned the vigilante identity that her sister Sara carried in Arrow’s second season and third season premiere. It’s most likely that viewers won’t see Lance don the mask and leather jacket until Arrow’s mid-season finale, or the second half of season three in 2015. The CW debuted the first official look at Laurel as Black Canary last week.
Arrow’s latest episode, “Draw Back Your Bow,” airs tonight at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
