DC DELIGHTS #5: ARROW, THE FLASH Writers At The Ready, SPOILERS, Suicide Squad Stuff, And More

Surprisingly, in comparison with last week’s DC Delights this week’s is a little less intense. As this week’s DC Delights is smaller and more bite sized. Anyway, this week we’re talking Arrow & The Flash writers ready themselves for their next seasons, Gotham season 2 gets season regular, and a bunch of other TV news. On the movie side, we have more Suicide Squad stuff, mainly BTS photos, Momoa gives director a thumbs up, updates on the cancelled George Miller’s Justice League, and much much more! Then some potential spoilers at the end, hint hint that is your first warning!

SO let us dive right in!

TV NEWS

The writers of both Arrow and The Flash have begun to map out the fourth and second seasons respectively. For The Flash writers they will be tackling how to introduce more speedsters and more villains, on the other hand Arrow writers will be meddling with the fourth season villain, Damian Darhk, and many other story arcs and more!

Nicholas D’Agosto made his debut fairly early on in Gotham’s first season last year – popping up in episodes 9 and 10 as a key element in the mid-season finale. Sadly the actor, who plays the duplicitous ‘Harvey Dent’ on the show, only returned for a single episode in the second half of the season. Fans of the character will therefore no doubt be happy to learn that D’Agosto has been bumped up to regular status for next season, per the actor’s Twitter account:

Punisher: War Zone and Green Street Hooligans director Lexi Alexander was talking to fans on Twitter in a quick Q&A, and she made a surprising reveal when one of them asked if Marvel have been in touch to ask her to direct one of their shows on online streaming service Netflix. “They have not. But I’m excited to direct Arrow in August. ;-)”

Victor Garber, who plays the Dr. Martin Stein half of Firestorm, revealed that his other half, Robbie Amell, will appear in the season two premiere of The CW’s “The Flash,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“Robbie and I will be joined on the first episode of the (next) season of ‘The Flash,’ and then we’ll see what happens,” Garber told THR.

Garber is also slated to appear as a series regular in the “Flash”/”Arrow” spinoff, “Legends of Tomorrow,” alongside Caity Lotz, Wentworth Miller, Dominic Purcell and Brandon Routh. Yet there have been no reports that say Amell will join him in the show, leaving Firstorm’s status — at least the Ronnie Raymond half — in question. THR says Amell is “expected to make an appearance,” but not as a series regular.

Garber also teased that The CW had larger plans for the spinoff beyond its initial 15-episode season, saying, “They [CW] aren’t going to introduce a limited series. This isn’t HBO. They want the Full Monty.”

“The Flash” & Arrow returns to The CW and Gotham airs on Fox this fall, with “Legends of Tomorrow” slated to debut in early 2016.

Movie News

Jason Momoa is super stoked to be working with James Wan on Aquaman. Sure grossing $1.4 billion USD and counting on Fast & Furious 7 certainly helped Wan raise his profile and officially land the directing gig after being rumored for months. Wan will also work with Kurt Johnstad (300, Act of Valor) on developing the script.  Reports state that though Wan signed on to helm both Robotech and Aquaman at the same time, Wan will tackle Aquaman first after completing work on The Conjuring 2: The Endfield Experiment .  Wan should complete his work on The Conjuring 2 by Spring 2016, giving him plenty of time to tackle Aquaman for its July 27, 2018 release date.

Game on. Super stoked Aloha AC

With cameras surrounding the action packed scene Batman actor Ben Affleck’s stunt double leapt atop the moving vehicle and endeavoured to tear a hole in the roof.
Meanwhile, The Joker – a stunt double stand-in for Jared Leto – laughed maniacally while driving at speed through the empty city street.
Onlookers were also treated to another glimpse of the Batmobile, with the car cruising close by shortly after the action packed scene concluded.

While Suicide Squad director David Ayer has declared that exterior principal photography has been completed, new photos have surfaced with the cast and crew in between takes in Toronto. In addition to a first look at actress Cara Delevingne, who’s playing June Moone/the Enchantress, we also have yet another look at Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag), Jay Hernandez (EL Diablo), and Karen Fukuhara (Katana) all sporting some bruises in full costume after shooting a subway station scene.

Lastly here are some random BTS photos I have found online.

Directed by David Ayer from his script, Suicide Squad stars Will Smith (Deadshot), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag), Jared Leto (the Joker), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jai Courtney (Boomerang),
Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), Cara Delevingne (Enchantress), Jessie Eisenberg (Lex Luthor), and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Killer Croc), with Raymond Olubawale (King Shark), Jay Hernandez, Ike Barinholtz, Jim Parrack, Adam Beach, and Scott Eastwood. The film releases on August 5, 2016!

There have already been a couple of live-action Swamp Thing movies, but although they’re campy fun, they are most definitely not a good representation of the the layered, interesting DC character. There’s been talk of Swamp Thing appearing in Guillermo del Toro’s Dark Universe movie (don’t hold your breath for that one), but short of that or another current DCCU outing it seems the best chance we had for decent take on the Earth Elemental came and went with the aborted 2010 project, which would have been produced by Joel Silver and written by Vincenzo Natali.

The latter has now posted the first four pages of his screenplay, and the direction the movie was going should be obvious to fans of Alan Moore’s acclaimed run.

It’s pretty much unheard of (unless you count Dame Judi Dench’s M returning for the Daniel Craig era Bond flicks) for an actor to reprise a role once the movie they originally appeared in has been rebooted, but that doesn’t stop fans wishing it would happen from time to time. Sure it’d mean continuity/canon issues – but who wouldn’t like to see J.K. Simmons back as J.J. Jameson in Marvel’s new Spider-Man movie for example? The same could be said for Mark Strong’s Sinestro, who was praised as one of the only positive aspects of Warner Bros.’ first Green Lantern attempt.

In an interview with MTV, Strong says he was proud of what he achieved with the performance, but doesn’t think there’s be a place for him in the DCCU as that character.

Despite being a huge comic book fan, Kevin Smith has never helmed a superhero flick, and while speaking to KPCC host John Horn at the Produced By conference in LA he admits that he’s not likely to ever get the opportunity to. But, he says if he did he’d like to make a movie based on The Question.

Smith’s idea would put a “noir-ish thriller” spin on the DC comics vigilante who uses a special substance to erase his features and a binary gas to recolour his cloths and hair. “I always thought if you were in an alley and f—ing Batman showed up you’d be like, ‘Oh f—, Batman.’ But if a dude shows up with no features and starts punching you, you would probably kill yourself in fear,” he explained to THR.

POTENTIAL SPOILERS FROM THIS POINT ON

After the first official trailer for Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice was released, fans were very curious about the shots that appeared to depict the Dark Knight brandishing a rifle of some sort. Obviously Batman and guns don’t exactly have a very good relationship (though it’s worth noting that he has actually used them in the comics when the situation called for it) so it seemed like an unusual choice of weapon for the character. Well, turns out it wasn’t a sniper rifle, but some sort of Kryptonite-laced spear!

This information comes from Heroic Hollywood, who choose not to go into any more detail in regards to how Batman comes by the Kryptonite, or how he uses it against Superman (we assume he… spears him?) but that one tidbit alone makes for some interesting speculation. We know Bats will eventually suit-up in that very formidable looking Dark Knight Returns-inspired armor, so perhaps the spear is just a precursor to that and one of his first attempts to bring down the Man of Steel?

Heroic Hollywood again claims to have some more details on the Dark Knight’s role in the Suicide Squad movie, and it definitely sounds like we’ll be getting classic Batman based on this scene description:

In short, he goes and pays Amanda Waller a visit. Batman BREAKS into her massive security prison. In fact…he’s already inside Amanda Waller’s office waiting for her in the shadows when she appears. The guards are clueless. Batman has a bone to pick with Waller. You see Batman is totally against the concept behind the Suicide Squad, in fact he warns Waller that he will hold her personally responsible for any innocents The Joker & the rest of the Suicide Squad kill. A warning so stern that he has to visit Waller personally to deliver the message.

There you have it folks another DC Delights completed, and now I hope you are fully up to date on all things DC! Goodbye and enjoy your weekend!

AQUAMAN Finds Its Director

Warner Bros. Pictures announced this week that director James Wan (“Furious Seven,” “The Conjuring”) will take the helm of the Studio’s upcoming Aquaman feature film, with Jason Momoa (“Game of Thrones”) starring as the sea-dwelling Super Hero.  The announcement was made by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, Warner Bros. Pictures.

Silverman stated, “We’ve been so lucky to have worked with James, first on New Line’s ‘The Conjuring’ and now on their upcoming ‘The Conjuring 2,’ and are thrilled to have him on board as we continue to expand our DC slate.  The Aquaman film will be a major tentpole picture for us and James’s span of work has proven him able to take on any manner of project, bringing his incredible creative talent and unique voice to the material.”

Wan will also be supervising the script by Kurt Johnstad (“300,” “300: Rise of an Empire”).  The film is being produced by Charles Roven, Deborah Snyder and Zack Snyder.

Roven said, “James is not only a great storyteller but can make action truly explode on the big screen, and Jason has a dynamic presence that commands your attention.  Together, they will bring an undeniable vitality and energy to this character as he headlines his first feature film.”

An icon for over 70 years, Aquaman is the King of the Seven Seas.  This reluctant ruler of Atlantis, caught between a surface world constantly ravaging the sea and Atlanteans looking to lash out in revolt, is committed to protecting the entire globe.

Currently set for a 2018 release, the film is based on characters appearing in comic books published by DC Entertainment.

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice will be in theaters on March 25th, 2016; Suicide Squad on August 5th, 2016; Wonder Woman – June 23rd, 2017; Justice League – November 17th, 2017; The Flash – March 23rd, 2018; Aquaman – July 27th, 2018; Shazam – April 5th, 2019; Justice League 2 – June 14th, 2019; Cyborg – April 3rd, 2020; Green Lantern – June 19th, 2020.

Byung-hun Lee & Jason Momoa Joins THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN Remake

Already set to play Aquaman in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Jason Momoa has signed up for a new cinematic ensemble project. According to The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline, the former “Game of Thrones” star and Byung-hun Lee (I Saw the Devil, G.I. Joe: Retaliation) in the role of Billy Rocks has joined the cast of Training Day director Antoine Fuqua’s The Magnificent Seven opposite Denzel Washington (who took home an Oscar for Training Day), Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Chris Pratt, The Equalizer‘s Haley Bennett, Boyhood‘s Ethan Hawke, Elite Squad‘s Wagner Moura and “Marvel’s Daredevil” star Vincent D’Onofrio. According to the trade, Momoa will play one of the film’s antagonists.

Originally drafted by “True Detective” scribe Nic Pizzolatto (since rewritten by The Blind Side‘s John Lee Hancock), The Magnificent Seven will remake the 1960 film directed by John Sturges that itself was inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 classic Seven Samurai. Sturges’ version starred Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Coburn and Robert Vaughn as a group of disparate gunmen who come together to protect a Mexican village from bandits led by Eli Wallach. It led to a number of sequels as well as a CBS television series.

The new film is said to feature a victimized mining town, taken over by a gold baron, rather than the Mexican village of the original.

James Wan Eyed To Direct AQUAMAN

Fresh off the record-breaking success of Furious 7, THR is reporting that director James Wan is being eyed to direct Warner Bros.’ Aquaman movie starring Jason Momoa. Per usual, “being eyed” doesn’t mean he’ll necessarily take the gig, but it is quite the opportunity and Wan has expressed interest in having a hand in the DC Cinematic Universe, so it’s hard to imagine him passing if the situation does move from preliminary talks to an official offer.

However, there is a chance it won’t even come down to what he wants. When Wan joined the Fast and Furious franchise, he signed on to do two films. After all the scheduling changes due to Paul Walker‘s passing, Universal gave him the OK to go make The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist, but after he’s done with that, they still could exercise the option and bring him back for Furious 8. But, then again, Universal could also want to get to work on the next installment fast (no pun intended), and choose someone else instead.

At this point, it’s pretty clear that any project would be lucky to have Wan. He jumpstarted his career with the beloved low-budget horror movie Saw and then went on to deliver high quality follow-ups including Insidious and The Conjuring. By the time The Conjuring scored rave reviews and snagged $41.9 million opening weekend, it was pretty clear he was going to continue to hit it big as a horror filmmaker. But then Furious 7 came up.

Wan was working with a much bigger budget than usual while making The Conjuring, but it was still nothing compared to a Fast and Furious-sized price tag. Plus, jump scares and car chases are two completely different forms of action and suspense. But, despite the big changes, Wan made the transition exceptionally well proving he’s worthy of the largest, most high-profile projects the industry has to offer – projects like an upcoming DC superhero movie.

Aquaman isn’t due in theaters until July 27, 2018, but it’s a big film. It’d be a smart move for Warner Bros. to lock someone in fast, especially if Wan is their top choice. After the monumental success of Furious 7, there’s no doubt someone will try to snatch him right up after he finishes the Conjuring sequel.

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice will be in theaters on March 25th, 2016; Suicide Squad on August 5th, 2016; Wonder Woman – June 23rd, 2017; Justice League – November 17th, 2017; The Flash – March 23rd, 2018; Aquaman – July 27th, 2018; Shazam – April 5th, 2019; Justice League 2 – June 14th, 2019; Cyborg – April 3rd, 2020; Green Lantern – June 19th, 2020.

Jason Momoa Talks AQUAMAN Costume; Will Bring His Sense Of Humour To The Role

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice star Jason Momoa was asked about reprising the role of Aquaman in 2017’s Justice League Part One, and while we’ve heard a few reports about who and what will appear in that movie, it sounds like it’s still in the VERY early stages of development. “Justice League is quite a ways off,” the actor said. “We don’t have scripts and stuff like that. I’ll bring my professionalism there. I’ll bring my sense of humor. Hopefully people will like that. If they don’t I’ll modify it.”

That sounds like an interesting approach, but not half as interesting as the very unique look he could be seen sporting in the first official image Tweeted out by director Zack Snyder not too long ago. “Michael [Wilkinson], the head costume designer, he created all of that,” Momoa revealed. “I basically just showed up and he made it happen. And It’s all Zack, through his genius mind. I’m going to be in one of the biggest movies in history in a minute, playing a superhero. And I have kids so that’s cool. My kids can finally see something that I’m in.”

Zack Snyder Shares First Official Image of Jason Momoa as AQUAMAN

Ever since Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice wrapped its production last December, fans have been dying for more official images and tid-bits from director Zack Snyder and Warner Bros, especially considering the long wait until the film’s release in 2016.

Now, Zack Snyder took to Twitter to share the first official picture of Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones) as Aquaman, who will make a cameo in the sequel to 2013’s Man of Steel, and he looks BADASS! Check it out below:

Starring Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane, Jesse Eisenberg, and Jeremy Irons, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice is set to be released on March 25th, 2016.

Jason Momoa Talks More On Portraying AQUAMAN, Diversity, And Being In JUSTICE LEAGUE

Given that, for almost a year, Jason Momoa had to dance around countless questions surrounding his cameo as Aquaman in the highly-anticipated Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it’s always a pleasure to now hear the actor talk passionately about portraying the DC character; even he’s saying the same thing over and over again.

Therefore, his recent interview with The Daily Beast is no exception as Momoa reiterates why he’s excited for the Aquaman role which will span at least four years. “It’s awesome as an actor to know what your future is going to be because I have children and I’ve busted my ass to put food on the table,” he said. “It’s awesome knowing that I’m going to be in Justice League because my son is the biggest Batman fan and my daughter loves Wonder Woman. It’ll be cool for them to see me in something because they’re not going to be watching Game of Thrones or Red Road anytime soon, but now they can see Daddy kicking ass in IMAX.” On bringing diversity to superheroes, Jason Momoa continued, “I’ve had to bust ass to be in this industry. A lot of things are very black and white,” he says. “Aquaman is especially cool because being a Kanaka Maoli—being Hawaiian—our Gods are Kanaloa and Maui, and the Earth is 71 percent water, so I get to represent that. And I’m someone who gets to represent all the islanders, not some blond-haired superhero. It’s cool that there’s a brown-skinned superhero.” When the Daily Beast mentioned the irony that Momoa’s first major acting role was as a lifeguard in Baywatch Hawaii, the actor laughed before saying, “It’s a trip. I spent 15 years trying to dig myself out of the Baywatch hole, and now I’m Aquaman. Life is very good.”

After being introduced in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice on March 25, 2016, Jason Momoa will later return to Aquaman full-fledged under Zack Snyder’s direction in Justice League Part One on November 17, 2017, and then headline the standlone Aquaman movie on July 27, 2018.

Jason Momoa Says Aquaman Won’t Have Blonde Hair

At the Sundance Film Festival, Jason Momoa was answering questions during the Smart Works panel. There were a couple questions about playing Aquaman in the DC Comics cinematic universe.

Momoa was asked, what can fans of the comic book expect from his version. “Well, things are going to be a little different,” Momoa responded. “When I first went in I met with Zack (Snyder). His idea is pretty amazing. When I went in, he told me … my jaw kind of dropped. My jaw doesn’t normally drop. What he has planned for the DC world and for … definitely for Aquaman is something that, you know… I think I was brought on for a certain reason and they got some really cool plans for him. I’m really excited for everyone to see it.”

Momoa then tells how difficult it was to keep the casting news quiet. He had known he landed the role of Aquaman over a year ago. “Last year, when I was on this panel I was like eating chicken breasts and in training when I wasn’t supposed to talk about anything,” Momoa confessed. “I wasn’t supposed to say anything until 2016. So I told a bunch of people that they could punch me in the face if I was on it, so I’m going to get hit a couple times. But they finally released it. I was supposed to keep it a secret for 3 years.”

Then the host of the panel mentioned that Michael Shannon (“Man Of Steel”) was spotted at Sundance wearing an Aquaman t-shirt. “That’s awesome!” Momoa exclaimed. The host then follows that up with, “What’s your relationship there?” Which seems to allude to our recent report regarding General Zod’s involvement with Batman v Superman. Her question was followed by an awkward silence. Momoa completely dodges the question by changing the subject to a canned response about how important the role is because of his Polynesian roots and its connection to Hawaiian gods.

Later on, a 74-year-old woman proclaiming to be a huge fan of the Aquaman comic books wanted to know if Momoa’s King Of The Seven Seas will have a beard and mustache. “Well, just going off what you’ve seen so far ma’am, I don’t think he is going to be blonde or white,” Momoa stated. “I can’t really tell you because I haven’t shot it yet. I hate to disappoint. But um, you know, I’m a little different than what those others. I hope you watch it with an open heart.”

Jeff Nichols Possibly Revealed As Aquaman Director

The hits just keep on coming from the Sony e-mail leaks, as Amy Pascal’s personal messages reportedly name Mud filmmaker Jeff Nichols as the director of Aquaman.

This one is a bit less of a smoking gun than some of the previous revelations to come out of the Sony e-mails because, unlike many of the stories, the site reporting it (The Daily Beast, linked above) doesn’t actually quote from the e-mail or give specific details besides the fact that it’s in there somewhere.

The understated visual style of Nichols may seem like an odd fit for a fantasy story, but the film he’s currently working on, Midnight Special, centers on a boy with super powers. That film will star Man of Steel’s Michael Shannon, Spider-Man’s Kirsten Dunst and Star Wars: The Force Awakens’s Adam Driver.

The Aquaman movie is one that seems to have been in development for some time, with DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns saying as far back as 2012 that Warner Bros. was hoping to develop one.

Jason Momoa will star in the film, which is expected in theaters on July 27, 2018. Leonardo diCaprio is reportedly executive producing through his Appian Way banner.

It’s likely the film will draw inspiration from Johns’ critically-acclaimed 2012 relaunch of Aquaman. Dressing rooms labeled for Kahina, a member of the Aquaman-centric superhero team The Others, and The Others’ longtime enemy the KGBeast have appeared on the set of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, although it’s not clear whether they will really have a cameo or it’s a misdirection.

Jason Mamoa Talks Aquaman And His DC Future

We’ve heard from Jason Momoa since he was confirmed to be playing Arthur Curry, aka Aquaman, in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the standalone movie in 2018. However, the actor recently held a panel at the Comic-Con Experience in São Paulo, Brazil, where he talked more about playing the DC Comics King of the Seas. Thanks to Twitter updates via user DCU Movie Page, check out what Momoa said about Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, how many movies he’s signed up for, and who he’d want to direct his Aquaman movie, which is set for release on July 27, 2018.
