KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE Sequel In The Works At Fox

A sequel to the surprise blockbuster “Kingsman: The Secret Service” is in the works at Fox.

There was no announcement by the studio or a timetable, but there will be a followup to the R-rated comic book adaptation directed by Matthew Vaughn and starring Colin Firth.

It makes sense. The London-set “Kingsman: The Secret Service” crossed the $400 million mark at the global box office this weekend. It generated most of that — about $275 million — from abroad.

It became clear Fox had a hit on its hands when it opened to $41 million against “Fifty Shades of Grey” over the Presidents Day holiday weekend in the U.S.

Samuel Jackson, Michael Caine and Taron Egerton co-starred in “Kingsman,” which had an $80 million production budget. Vaughn also co-wrote with Jane Goldman and produced the film, which was based on the comic book “The Secret Service” created by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons.

The London-based Vaughn, who directed 2011’s “X-Men: First Class” for Fox and “Kick-Ass,” has a busy schedule.

He’s in line to direct “Flash Gordon,’ a Fox reboot of the 1930s comic book series that led to a series of Buster Crabbe serials and a 1980 movie. Vaughn is also working on a film for Fox about Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards, who became the U.K.’s first Olympic ski jumper in 1988. And Vaughn is developing another adaptation of a comic book for Fox, “The Golden Age,” about superheroes in a retirement home.

He and Valerie Van Galder are producing “Ghostgirl,” based on the best-selling young adult novel series by Tonya Hurley, about a high school senior who feels invisible and suddenly really is, when she dies.

Matthew Vaughn Would’ve Had Juggernaut Instead Of Quicksilver For X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

While chatting to Empire on their most recent podcast, Vaughn described his vision for the awesome Quicksilver rescue scene — and it didn’t involve Quicksilver! Instead, it would have been Juggernaut (the unstoppable villain played by Vinnie Jones in X-Men 3) who smashed through the Pentagon and led Magneto to freedom. Originally, the super-fast mutant didn’t factor into the sequence at all, and it began with Beast piloting the Blackbird over Washington airspace. This much we already knew, but Vaughn’s description adds in some dialogue from the characters involved.

“I had Juggernaut being thrown out of a plane at 20,000 feet and using his head to go down a hole to get to the bottom of [The White House]. I had Beast saying, ‘I have a plan,’ and him replying, ‘What’s the plan? What’s the plan?’, and they go higher and higher and Beast was going to go, ‘This is it!’ and chuck him out the window. Then he goes smashing through [The White House] with his and Magneto goes, ‘Who the [frick] are you?”

Though that sounds cool in its own right, the Quicksilver slo-mo scene is fantastic, and Vaughn himself thinks it’s “the best scene in the movie”. The director goes on to admit that Singer’s take on things worked out for the best, admitting with a laugh: “I would have made the movie worse. The Quicksilver one was better.”

Wolverine Would’ve Been Recast If Matthew Vaughn Directed X-Men: Days Of Future Past

Can you imagine a Wolverine that isn’t Hugh Jackman? Well, if Matthew Vaughn had chose to direct X-Men: Days Of Future Past instead of Kingsman: The Secret Service, that’s what you would’ve seen.

Vaughn directed 2011’s X-Men: First Class which reinvigorated 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise after Brett Ratner’s X-Men: The Last Stand sapped the series of its momentum. With First Class a success Fox moved forward with a sequel and wanted Vaughn to return but he left the project to adapt Mark Millar’s spy comic and Bryan Singer, who directed the first two X-Men films, took over directing duties.

In a new interview with MTV, Vaughn reveals some more details about the version of Days Of Future Past that he would’ve told that differs from what we saw. The most important change would’ve been Wolverine being recast for the scenes that take place in the past. Yes, Vaughn doesn’t think Hugh Jackman is as ageless as most of us do. Although, Vaughn still wanted Jackman to appear in the future scenes, so he wouldn’t have been completely recast.

A HIT-GIRL Prequel MIGHT Happen

Chloe Grace Moretz may have said she’s “done with Hit-Girl”, but director Matthew Vaughn is “pretty sure” he can persuade her to return to the character. When asked about the possibility of a third Kick-Ass movie, Vaughn said that he hopes to do a Hit-Girl prequel first, and win back the fans that were lost after the absolutely average Kick-Ass 2. He thinks if they can pull that off, then it’ll be easier to get Moretz and Aaron Taylor Johnson back to finish the story.

“Do you know what’s going to be next if I do it… we’ve finished plotting it. What we have to do is, we’ve got to do the FIRST CLASS to the KICK-ASS world. We lost a few fans on Kick-Ass 2. It wasn’t as loved as one would’ve hoped. So we have this idea for a Hit Girl prequel. It’s a really strong, really simple prequel where I think we can regain the love and the passion. If that happens, I’m pretty sure I can persuade Aaron and Chloe to come back and finish the story of Kick-Ass with Kick-Ass 3”.

Moretz has just turned 18 (Happy birthday!), so we assume Vaughn is thinking of a different actress for this Hit-Girl prequel. The Kingsman: The Secret Service director also admits that he wouldn’t helm the movie himself, but is looking for “someone like” Gareth Evans: “A really bold, clever director. Most of it is set in the far east.” Sounds like Evans isn’t actually on board yet, but hopefully they work something out.
