‘The Hulk’ Was Originally To Turn Grey In AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

The following video takes a closer look at the work which went into bringing the Hulk vs. Hulkbuster fight to life in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and it’s revealed that the plan was for the Green Goliath to go grey during the time he spend under the control of the Scarlet Witch. A specific reason for that not happening in the movie isn’t given, but it sounds like Marvel decided to keep him his original colour, possibly overruling Whedon’s original plan. Who knows, but as merchandise was made for a grey “Savage Hulk”, it might have been a choice made at a fairly late stage in production.

Ant-Man will be in theaters July 17, 2015; Captain America: Civil War – May 6, 2016; Doctor Strange – November 4, 2016; Guardians of the Galaxy 2 – May 5, 2017; Spider-Man reboot – July 28, 2017; Thor: Ragnarok – November 3, 2017; The Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 – May 4, 2018; Black Panther – July 6, 2018; Captain Marvel – November 2, 2018; The Avengers: Infinity War Part 2 – May 3, 2019; Inhumans – July 12, 2019.

Mark Ruffalo Talks HULK STANDALONE Film

According to Mark Ruffalo, a solo Hulk film might be the most contradictory move that Marvel Studios could make for the character.

In a recent interview for Avengers: Age of Ultron, the Hulk actor revealed that the Green Goliath never actually wants to be around. Causing millions of dollars in property damage will do that. So, putting a spotlight on him for more than two hours wouldn’t really work with the character’s true desires.

“It’s a particularly hard character to make a movie about because he doesn’t want to be there, generally. It’s hard to make a movie about a guy who doesn’t want to be there,” Ruffalo said. “And he doesn’t want to do the very thing that you want him to do. So it gets a little frustrating as an audience, and there’s only so much of that.”

But Ruffalo doesn’t think that Hulk’s story shouldn’t be told. Moving beyond Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ruffalo suggested where he’d like the next chapter in Bruce Banner’s saga to head, citing the inner conflicts between Hulk and Banner.

“I think there’s a whole relationship with Banner and Hulk that needs to be discovered. Hulk is as afraid of Banner as Banner is afraid of Hulk. It’s in the comics. But films haven’t really been able to get inside of Hulk’s head,” Ruffalo told Entertainment Weekly. “The technology wasn’t available to make it nuanced enough to do that, and now it is. Both of these guys—or, obviously, the same guy—have got to come to peace somehow with each other. And I think that confrontation is building along the lines of this film.”

Mark Ruffalo Talks PLANET HULK Desires

Talking to IGN recently, Mark Ruffalo was asked what’s next for Hulk following Avengers: Age of Ultron, to which he replied “I think there’s a lot of places to go with him [Hulk].” When the site suggested that one of those could be outer space, the actor replied: “Well he’s going to space. Yeah, I mean there’s some talk of maybe Planet Hulk. I’d be completely interested in entertaining that.”

Don’t get too excited just yet though, as Ruffalo went on to say that he hasn’t been actively talking to Marvel about the project, and reiterated that it isn’t part of Marvel’s announced slate. Right now, it seems like the most likely place for Planet Hulk to happen will be in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, setting the stage for Avengers: Infinity War and keeping the Green Goliath off the table during Captain America: Civil War.

MARVEL’S HULK: Why Marvel Doesn’t Really Want To Give Hulk A Movie YET!

While Marvel has delighted fans with the return of characters like Iron Man, Thor and Captain America in Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a question that has been repeatedly brought up by fans is, “Where’s Hulk?” The green monster became a fan favorite after Joss Whedon’s The Avengers in 2012, and yet the film studio decided that he would be the only one of the four core team members without a solo movie sequel. Why? It turns out it was decided that he could be kept temporarily as a character unique to Avengers films.

It was director Joss Whedon who let this interesting tidbit slip while many journalists had the chance to talk to him this summer while visiting the set of The Avengers: Age of Ultron. The writer/director was discussing the use of Hulk in the movie and the fact that he didn’t have his own Phase 2 solo film, and he remembered a conversation he had with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. Whedon quoted the executive, saying that he was told, “We think right now it’s good to have somebody who we could only have in The Avengers.”

Interestingly enough, this was news that Joss Whedon was more than happy to hear. While he assured us that he wasn’t the one telling the folks at Marvel Studios not to make a Hulk movie, he revealed that it does make his job easier that at least one of his characters from the first Avengers didn’t go off on some kind of blockbuster adventure as seen in Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Said Whedon,

Everybody loves Mark [Ruffalo]. He’s phenomenal. But the fact that there hasn’t been a Hulk since that Hulk, it doesn’t suck. I mean, my job is hard enough. Cap’s had a movie, Thor’s had a movie. Everyone’s gone through big changes. Iron Man had a movie. So I have to juggle everybody’s perception of that while still making a movie that you can see having not seen any [other Marvel movies] except the first Avengers – or not even that.”

It’s worth noting that Hulk won’t be getting his own solo movie in Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe either but Kevin Feige has gone to say that he would be featured a lot in phase 3 i.e, he could show up in Captain America: Civil War.
