New FANTASTIC FOUR Posters; Cast Talk Haters!

Twentieth Century Fox has released a new banner and four character posters for Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four!

An origin story said to be inspired largely by the “Ultimate Fantastic Four” comics (the first arc of which was written by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Millar with Joe Kubert illustrating), Fantastic Four offers a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team. The story centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.

Speaking to MTV, the cast of Fox’s upcoming Fantastic Four reboot film reflected on the early apprehension that the movie received from fans.

“I was very surprised at first, before any trailers were out, how negative people were about it without seeing anything,” said Kate Mara, who plays the Invisible Woman, Sue Storm, in the film.

A lot of that apprehension was likely due to Fox’s previous two Fantastic Four movies, which were not well-loved by fans. Mara noted that, once director Josh Trank’s vision for the franchises was put out there for audiences to see, people began to come around.

“Then, that very quickly changed when we actually showed some footage,” she said. “So that was a nice thing.”

“Marvel’s First Family” will include Whiplash‘s Miles Teller as Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), “House of Cards” star Kate Mara as Sue Storm (The Invisible Woman), Fruitvale Station and Chronicle‘s Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm (The Human Torch) and The Adventures of Tintin‘s Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm (The Thing). Dawn of the Planet of the Apes‘ Toby Kebbell will also star as Doctor Doom alongside Reg E. Cathey (“The Wire”) as as Dr. Franklin Storm and Tim Blake Nelson (O Brother, Where Art Thou?) as Harvey Elder, aka The Mole Man.

Fantastic Four features a screenplay by Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past) and is set to hit the big screen August 7.

Cast And Kinberg Talk FANTASTIC FOUR; Mr. Fantastic Will Stretch!

So, when can we expect Invisible Woman and The Thing’s first date then? Actually it turns out Jamie Bell is just joking about after being asked what we might get from any potential future story-lines. In fact, the foursome spend pretty much the entire interview taking the piss — but a few interesting tidbits also slip through.

REED RICHARDS IS A SCIENTIFIC PRODIGY WHO HAS BEEN QUIETLY EXPLORING THE UNIVERSE’S DEEPEST MYSTERIES IN HIS GARAGE, AFTER SCHOOL. AFTER BEING TRANSFORMED BY ONE OF HIS EXPERIMENTS, HE CAN WARP THE SPACE AROUND HIM, AND APPEAR TO STRETCH HIS BODY INTO IMPOSSIBLE FORMS AND TO INCREDIBLE LENGTHS.

It was all just a clever way of trying to explain Mister Fantastic’s (Miles Teller) powers that was a little too complicated.

Speaking to HitFix, Fantastic Four screenwriter Simon Kinberg set the record straight.   “I think it was confusing.  I was a little confused by it myself. The intent was to try to explain the power with some sort of scientific explanation, but as you pointed out, most of his powers defy what we know about physics. The upshot of it is that he stretches in his movie. That is his power. That’s the simplest explanation.”

As far as the J.J. Abrams-type of secrecy surrounding the project is concerned, Kinberg stated it’s really just a byproduct of trying to make sure things are perfect, visually, before they’re released.  “This thing here, it really has been a concerted thing because we really just don’t want to show anything until it’s ready, until it looks great, and they show the real intention of the shot or the movie, then we’ll show it. That’s why we’ve held on to so much. We held on to the Thing. We held on to Doom. We held on until we were further along.”

In reality, it should have been obvious that Reed will stretch in the film.  Hell, there was a stretching scene in the most recent trailer.  However, “the internet” turned a blind-eye to this fact and simply wanted to cause a bit of controversy.  Kinberg also points out that as the promotions for the film ramp up, information and marketing assetts will be released from many different sources that’s nearly impossible to keep under the supervision of a single voice.

Some new character bios from the updated official website also reveal a few additional details about Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and The Thing. Head on over to the site by following the link below for extended versions narrated by Dr. Storm along with a look at the cellular changes which each of the heroes has undergone.

SUE IS BRILLIANT AND BEAUTIFUL, INDEPENDENT AND SARCASTIC. THE POWER TO BECOME INVISIBLE AND TO GENERATE HER OWN FORCE-FIELDS CAN MAKE HER HARDER TO REACH THAN EVER—BUT THAT WON’T STOP SOME OF HER TEAMMATES, ESPECIALLY REED, FROM TRYING.

A TROUBLEMAKER AND A THRILL-SEEKER, JOHNNY IS THE ROCK STAR OF THE TEAM. HIS POWERS ALLOW HIM TO SHOOT FIREBALLS, FLY AT BREAKNECK SPEEDS, AND REALLY LIGHT IT UP.

A RARE BREED BRAWN AND HEART, BEN IS WARM, EVEN SENSITIVE, DESPITE HIS ROUGH-AND-TUMBLE UPBRINGING. HE IS ROCK-SOLID—IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE. A LOYAL AND PROTECTIVE FRIEND, HIS STONE BODY GIVES HIM EPIC STRENGTH AND MAKES HIM VIRTUALLY INDESTRUCTIBLE.

20th Century Fox has released 3 new images from Josh Trank’s upcoming Fantastic Four reboot. At first glance a couple of them appear to be hi-res screen-grabs from the trailer, but there is a slightly different pic of Victor Domashev/Dr. Doom which provides a more detailed look at the villain.

Jamie Bell Talks Being FANTASTIC FOUR’S The THING

Jamie Bell recently took part in an interview with AOL Build when he discussed playing Ben Grimm, aka the Thing, in The Fantastic Four. “I’m hugely excited, it’s a huge responsibility”  he started. “It’s a very kind of a beloved property. It’s in the comic book universe, it’s right up there with all the rest of them. So, there is a lot of hoop-jumping, and trust. I think people were kind of confused when I was cast, but this is an origin story of these characters. I haven’t seen the film yet, but I’m very excited to see it. What I can tell you is, just from making the film and the journey that we’ve been on with it, is that the film is very much an experience; it really is. It’s really fun to be a part of. Simon Kinberg is a great comic book writer; comic book just runs through his veins. And Josh Trank is an original unique filmmaker. I’m very flattered and humbled to be a part of it.”

Jamie Bell was then asked how he got into character as the Thing, and he revealed that he got help from his King Kong co-star Andy Serkis, who also worked on the Hulk in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

“We used performance capture to get the essence of it,” he said. “Obviously I’m not made of rocks and obviously I’m not 6 foot 8! It’s about capturing the essence of a human being inside of that character when he is transformed and you do that through motion capture. It’s a technique that my friend Andy Serkis has very much spearheaded — he is the guru of performance capture. I’ve been lucky to work with him 3 or 4 times actually, so I very much consider him my mentor.”

It’s CLOBBERIN’ TIME For The THING

Entertainment Weekly have released their preview for the upcoming Fantastic Four movie which gives us this new still and a bunch more information about the movie itself. Here’s what they previewed:

Turns out levitating hurts. On this humid day on the Baton Rouge, La., set of Fantastic Four, the psychically gifted Sue Storm (Kate Mara) is about to catch some major air. After a cosmic accident has rendered Sue and her three pals superpowerful (more on that later), the group is quarantined in a secret government facility. For this scene, in which Sue struggles to master her ability to float (she can also turn invisible and project force fields), Mara stands on a crane and makes faces usually reserved for squats or dead lifts. “Move your knees around,” yells director Josh Trank from below. “It’s painful! It’s painful!” In most comic-book adaptations, superpowers are mainly just supercool. In the new Four, they feel more like a disability. “It’s not easy at all,” Mara says. “It’s exhausting.”

Fans of the franchise may be feeling a little fatigued too. Both the 2005 original, Fantastic Four, and the 2007 sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, performed well at the box office, but critics (and moviegoers) pretty much hated them. So Twentieth Century Fox went on the hunt for a fresh vision. Trank had delivered a 2012 sleeper hit for the studio with his found-footage superpowers flick, Chronicle. His immediate take on the Four was how terrifying it would be to have your arms suddenly turn into rubber, or your skin burst into flame. “I just kinda jumped to ‘body horror’ in my head,” he says. “Chronicle is about the evolution and strengthening of unique powers. This movie is really viewing them as a curse.”

In this origin-story reboot, the Four—Reed Richards (Miles Teller), Johnny Storm (Michael B. Jordan), Ben Grimm (Jamie Bell), and Sue (Mara)—are “infected” during an interdimensional-travel experiment. The event turns Reed into the elastic Mr. Fantastic, Johnny into the Human Torch, Ben into the Thing, and Sue into the Invisible Woman. “It’s as if you got into a car accident,” Mara says, “and a part of you is different for the rest of your life.”

Making matters worse, the fifth member of their crew, Victor (Toby Kebbell), has transformed as well, into an updated version of Dr. Doom, and the gang must grapple with their new skills—and the loss of their old selves—while finding a way to defeat him.

Trank describes the tone of the film as a cross between Steven Spielberg and Tim Burton—what he calls “Dark Amblin.” To help him achieve that, the studio paired him with writer-producer Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past). Trank told Kinberg he had two ambitions. First, the film had to feel scary and very real, more like a horror movie than a superhero flick. And second, it ultimately had to be a coming-of-age story. “Part of defining yourself,” Kinberg explains, “is that moment when you go from being dependent to being in control of your destiny.”

Or the destiny of a franchise. Based on footage shown to EW, Trank may have succeeded in rescuing the Four from obscurity. “We have all the ingredients to make something special,” Jordan says. “Now we have to just wait and see how that cake turns out.” Dark and not too sweet.
